The Race that Stops a Nation - Go Makybe Diva!
We saw history today. Makybe Diva won her 3rd straight Melbourne Cup - no other horse had ever accomplished that feat. It was amazing. There were over 100,000 people there - they might not have all bet on her (she was a weak favorite at 4.40-to-1), but they were all pulling for her down the stretch as she passed the rest of the horses in the 24-horse-field to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Mum, dad and I got all dressed up for the occasion. See more pictures in my November 2005 photo album. People all over the country get dressed up and take off from work in the middle of the afternoon to watch the race. It is like the Superbowl in the States - everyone is watching - but it lasts less than 4 minutes. Dad is a racing fan and said the Kentucky Derby is really big in the States, but nothing compared to how the Melbourne Cub is here in Oz. He has wanted to attend the Melbourne Cup since he was nine years old and saw the movie Phar Lap about the great Australian Horse who won the Cup in 1930. Mum and dad said we will make it a tradition and will try and come every year.
